Nuclear core and equipment manufacturer BWX Technologies is one of Virginia’s most prominent employers, with 2,150 of its 7,000 U.S. employees based in Lynchburg. The company’s U.S. headquarters is set on a sprawling 497-acre campus with a 1 million-square-foot facility in downtown Lynchburg and is one of the largest of its kind for the company.

BWX Technologies makes all the nuclear cores, fuel, and equipment for every submarine and every aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy fleet. In 2024, BWXT continued to deepen its roots in the region by expanding its Mt. Athos site in Campbell County with the BWXT Innovation Campus.
This 11-acre campus is home to the Advanced Technologies division, where research and development for space programs and nuclear advancements are underway. The new 170,000-square-foot facility, expected to be fully completed by the end of the year, will further strengthen BWXT’s capabilities in cutting-edge technologies.
The expansion of the Advanced Technologies business unit, which currently employs 330 people with plans to grow to 400 by 2025, underscores the region’s ability to attract and retain top talent. Many of these hires are new employees from the Lynchburg area, showcasing the local higher education system’s ability to supply the specialized skills required for BWXT’s advanced projects.

Additionally, BWXT’s designation as an Exemplary Environmental Enterprise (E3) by the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program highlights its dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
